The 16 inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max was part of the major 2021 redesign along with the 14 inch. Liquid Retina XDR display with mini-LED backlighting and ProMotion. 16.2 inch panel at 3456 x 2234 resolution. Big upgrade from the previous 2019 Intel 16 inch model.

First Apple Silicon 16 inch

The 2021 16 inch was the first Apple Silicon version of the larger MacBook Pro. Notch at the top for the camera, mini-LED backlighting, ProMotion up to 120Hz, MagSafe charging, ports returning. This design has continued through M2 and M3 generations.

Inside the display assembly theres the LCD panel with mini-LED backlight array, camera and cabling. When we do LCD only repairs we swap just the panel. Full display replacement swaps the whole assembly including housing.

LCD Only Replacement

LCD only replacement means swapping just the internal display panel while still keeping your original housing. Metal frame stays, camera stays, cabling stays. We remove the damaged panel and fit a new one.

This repair is available when the housing meets eligibility requirements. No dents, no bends in the frame. No liquid exposure. The 16 inch panels are expensive so LCD only saves alot when the housing is eligible.

Full Display Replacement

Full display replacement is necessary when the housing has damage. Dented frame, bent corners, liquid exposure around the display. These situations mean LCD only wont work properly.

With full display replacement we swap the entire lid assembly. As such its a bigger repair. True Tone may not work after because Apple ties this to the original display.

Common Issues

The 2021 16 inch has been out for a few years now so weve seen quite a few come through with screen damage. Cracked screens from drops, dead displays, backlight problems. The larger size makes these more prone to accidents during transport.
