The M1 Air kept the same wedge design as older Intel models. The housing is pretty sturdy but drops can still cause damage. We had one where the corner got bent from a fall. LCD only wasnt possible so full assembly was the repair path. Same quality outcome either way.
True Tone colour adjustment is a feature on the M1 Air. The calibration data lives in the original display housing. As such LCD only repair keeps True Tone working because that housing stays in place. Full assembly replacement means new hardware and the True Tone calibration doesnt transfer.

Impact cracks from drops are the main thing we see. The display cracks on impact and you get visible fracture lines. Pressure damage is another one where something gets pressed against the closed lid. The LCD fails in patches but sometimes the glass looks fine from outside.
Vertical lines and colour distortion can happen too. These point to LCD failure even without physical damage. The repair approach is the same regardless.
